  The refuge

On June 23 2006, the owners of the Domaine de nos Ancêtres inaugurated a refuge for the rehabilitation of orphan bear cubs. It’s the first refuge of its kind in the province of Québec! It’s also a dream come true for Danny Moore and Francine Bouchard, in collaboration with two French friends, Isabelle and Alain Boyaval, who have visited numerous similar facilities in Canada and the United States.

This rehabilitation centre will mainly be used to allow the orphan cubs to adapt easily to their natural habitat. This refuge will help them to better survive in nature. The owners of the refuge hope to learn more about this animal species. Even if humans encroach upon the bears’ territory and have to cohabitate with the species, they don’t really know them. Mr. Moore and Ms. Bouchard also want to visit schools to teach the children about bears. They also want to teach people about waste management in the forest. In fact, it is important not to feed bears in the forest, because they become accustomed to humans and can become dangerous. Don’t forget that even if they are really cute, bears remain wild animals.

In the next few years, the refuge owners hope to establish an interpretation centre that will allow visitors to observe, through cameras, the cubs in their enclosure. The refuge already has its first two residents, and the owners hope to welcome at least five bears in their first year of business.
